  • The type II CU 56 to U 63 submarines were all built at the Deutsche Werken in Kiel. Compared to the type II A, the boats were lengthened by 3.00 m. U 61 stood out from the sisters. This boat received a different tower, which roughly corresponds to the type II D tower. U 56 was sunk by aerial bombs in the port of Kiel on April 28, 1945. U 57 sank in September 1940 after a collision with the Norwegian freighter RONA off Brunsbüttel. The boat was lifted and put back into service. Together with U 58, the boat was sunk in Kiel itself. U 59 was decommissioned in April 1945. On May 2, 1945 the boats U 60 - U 62 sank in Wilhelmshaven. U 63 was lost on February 25, 1940 south of the Shetland Islands due to depth charges and torpedo hits.
